Dalam kitab ini Imam Al-Ghazali menggunakan istilah 'aqobah yang artinya jalan mendaki yang sukar ditempuh.

Menurut Imam Al-Ghazali ada tujuh 'aqobah yang dapat menghambat kualitas ibadah serta faktor-faktor yang menghambat komunikasi personal seorang hamba dengan Tuhan. Dalam teks indonesia 'aqobah diterjemahkan sebagai tanjakan.
Namun, ada juga yang menafsirkan kata 'aqobah dalam kitab ini sebagai metode atau juga rintangan. Tujuh tanjakan tersebut harus ditempuh oleh setiap hamba untuk meningkatkan kualitas ibadahnya kepada Allah.
Dengan demikian, tema pokok dalam kitab Minhajul Abidin ini lebih fokus dan lebih bersifat praktis jika dibandingkan dengan kitab Ihya Ulumuddin.
